I said; "give me the VIN and I can tell you."
Doc replied; "HLS30 30855".
Well I'll be darned... that 240-Z is an old friend of mine!! So I ask Doc to provide the owners contact information - if Doc wasn't going to buy it - I thought its original owner would love to have it back. Matter of fact he had said so many times.
Bill Jones and I were in the Service together and both bought our Z's from the same Dealer in Spokane, Washington. Bill's Silver 71 was beautiful!. Lowered with the BRE racing suspension, mid-close ratio 5spd and 4.11:1 rear gear. BRE headlight covers, both fiberglass painted to match the car and a clear set for nightime. BRE front Spook of course.
Above: Bill had to part with his Z in 1984. It was so clean and such a beauty it was put on the local Dealers show room floor.
I could understand why Bill wanted it back!! So I thought, what the heck, we'll go get it for him...... Why I think these crazy things is beyond me!! So I called my son Carl jr. and ask if he could make a road trip to haul this Z back. {none of the commercial transports would agree to pick it up - as it was way out in the foot hills of Northern Georgia, on narrow winding lanes. They weren't sure they could get big 18 wheelers back in there to pick up a non-operational vehicle. So what is a guy to do?.... Let the trip begin!!
Above: On our way, Georgia greets us with a beautifull run-riase.
Above:The Previous Owner {left}, tells Bill Whitten and his son that the extra radiator in the shed goes with the car. The red on the car is mostly the cars original factory primer. Bill is a long time friend of Doc's and he is a story in and of himself! Great guy that helped up find the PO's house and drag the car out for loading. I'm sure glad that Bill's son volunteered to go with us. We needed four strong backs to get the car out!
Above: Small dent in the left rear by the tail lights. The rear hatch lid, looks pretty good! In the background my son Carl sets up the winch, to drag the car onto the trailer.
Above: The Rigth Side looks pretty good, you can see some surface rust where the PO removed too much paint/primer, this has to be stopped at once!!
Above: The hood and front fenders look pretty good, the front bumper was bent and the BRE Spook is MIA.
Above: Getting ready to load the BJ's car for the long trip home.
Above: Air'ed up the tires, broke the rear drums loose, drug it out of the shed and finally loaded up and ready to go. All in just two and half hours!!
Above: 13 hours later - BJ's 71 sits in my garage, while my beautiful white 72 sits outside!!! {this isn't going to last for long Bill - old friends or not I'm not leaving my Z outside for long!!} With no paint on the car, we can't let our old friend sit out in the Florida rain. BJ better get it out of here before I start on it!!
